Voting Round #2
Apologies for the rapidfire voting post! We'll allow more time for the April 2011 voting round. I hope everyone is able to vote in this poll, and the book for March 2011 will be posted tomorrow.

You can find brief summaries of each novel behind the cut.

This poll is closed.

The Penelopiad (Margaret Atwood)
Beauty (Robin McKinley)
The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake (Aimee Bender)

The Penelopiad - Margaret Atwood (suggested by placebetween)
Drawing on a range of sources, in addition to The Odyssey, Atwood scripts the narrative of Penelope, the faithful and devoted wife of Odysseus and her 12 maids, who were killed upon the master's return. Atwood proposes striking interpretations of her characters that challenge the patriarchal nature of Greek mythology. The chapters transition between the firsthand account of Penelope and the chorus of maids as listeners are taken from Penelope's early life to her afterlife.

Beauty - Robin McKinley (suggested by linsadair)
This much-loved retelling of the classic French tale Beauty and the Beast elicits the familiar magical charm, but is more believable and complex than the traditional story. The plot follows that of the renowned legend: Beauty selflessly agrees to inhabit the Beast's castle to spare her father's life. Beauty's gradual acceptance of the Beast and the couple's deepening trust and affection are amplified in novel form. Robin McKinley's writing has the flavor of another century, and Beauty heightens the authenticity as a reliable and competent narrator.

The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake - Aimee Bender (suggested by aimmyarrowshigh)
Taking her very personal brand of pessimistic magical realism to new heights (or depths), Bender's second novel careens splendidly through an obstacle course of pathological, fantastical neuroses. Bender's narrator is young, needy Rose Edelstein, who can literally taste the emotions of whoever prepares her food, giving her unwanted insight into other people's secret emotional lives—including her mother's, whose lemon cake betrays a deep dissatisfaction. Bender has been called a fabulist, but emerges as more a spelunker of the human soul; carefully burrowing through her characters' layered disorders and abilities, Bender plumbs an emotionally crippled family with power and authenticity.

Plagiarizing from Amazon like a champ! I think the only thing I said about The Penelopiad was that it is historical fanfiction, so all good ...

These are the three I picked in the original vote. I win.

i voted for the first because it's the only one my school and city library has. this is what i get for going to a university in the middle of nowhere. (FFFUUUUU) BUT, i could order it to come from another university if needed. all three of them sound really good, so i really don't care.

I'll see if I can get PDFs of the three of them somewhere on the internet. briebellamy is usually a pretty reliable source for this. I'm also thinking about setting up a post with downloadable previously recommended books - I want to read so many of the ones that were suggested!

OH I TOTALLY SAW THAT PILOT AND LIKED JOSH. I've seen the pilots for the UK and US versions and was meh about them both, though I liked that the groundwork was better set up in the US pilot.

FYYEEEEEEAH!! Josh is the best! I've been watching the UK version since day 1 so when the US version was announced I was all angry and betrayed but I forced myself to try it out just to see and I'm so in love. I loved what they've changed and I'm currently enjoying it more than UK series 3 that's also airing at the same time.

I was JUST thinking about the fact that some people will have more limited access to books/libraries than others. We will see what we can do!
