March 2011 - Beauty (Robin McKinley)
And our book for March 2011 is ...

This much-loved retelling of the classic French tale Beauty and the Beast elicits the familiar magical charm, but is more believable and complex than the traditional story. The plot follows that of the renowned legend: Beauty selflessly agrees to inhabit the Beast's castle to spare her father's life. Beauty's gradual acceptance of the Beast and the couple's deepening trust and affection are amplified in novel form. Robin McKinley's writing has the flavor of another century, and Beauty heightens the authenticity as a reliable and competent narrator.

Thanks to linsadair for the suggestion! It is totally appropriate for our club to start with a retelling of Beauty and the Beast.

If you don't have access to the book and don't want to buy it, you can download a PDF here. If you can't open .rar files, the PDF is also uploaded here. However, I do feel compelled to remind you that Borders is bankrupt and most of its stock is 40% off (woohoo! sad woohoo!).

We'll start discussing up to the middle of the book (or up until Chapter 3, har har har) around March 15. Stay tuned for further postings, including our first weekend off-topic post. Happy March!

I'm so glad you suggested this. I've read it a couple of times before (years ago) and I love it.
linsadair on March 1st, 2011 02:48 pm (UTC)
My bff stole it from her college library and made me read it several years later after her parents paid a $75 late fee to said library so she could graduate.

Omg I totally had to pay my library $45 so I could graduate. I don't even know what the fees were for! We definitely didn't have Robin McKinley in the depths of the library or I would have been there much more.

Gonna download the .pdf this time since my library doesn't have it (I was pretty much sure they wouldn't have it since they don't have that much books in English ;___;) but I'll try to buy the next book since I just love having new books :')

Anyways, excited to begin this one!

I download PDFs all the time, so I don't know why I'm trying to guilt people above. I'm also excited about downloads if it means that more people in the club can easily read the book!

I do love having new books. Whenever I buy them, I sit around and stroke them and then arrange them on my bookshelf prettily. It's too much fun.

I love buying new books! And even more than that I love buying used/antique books. Mmmm they smell so good.

I have such love affairs with both old and new books. New books are fun because they are so clean and new and smell nice and look pretty. Old books are fun because sometimes other people have written in them, or you can see their favorite pages, and they smell nice too, and they can look so sophisticated, and now I'm in run-on sentence land so that's the end of that.

I LOVE RUN-ON SENTENCE LAND! THAT'S WHERE I LIVE!

For me old books > new books but I think I've just been heavily influence by growing up in antique stores. I love their history and how worn and loved they obviously are.

I just LOVE new textbook smell. Which is weird, because I don't even like textbooks that much.

No! I just spend all day with stupid high school math textbooks trying to figure out why they do what they do. Currently I am duplicating problems from one to another and banging my head on the table.

Yay! I'm so glad this one won. Most appropriate choice for our first book (other than DWJ)
La femme cachéela_faerie on March 1st, 2011 05:53 pm (UTC)
Sooo...if we have questions or ~thoughts on the book, are we allowed to make a post about it? Like, if I had a question about a passage I'd just read? (obviously not something super spoilery) Or do you want us to save everything for the discussion posts? How is this going to work?

Sorry to bombard you with questions girl!
Nichothodes Koryfoides: disney | danceplacebetween on March 1st, 2011 05:56 pm (UTC)
No, this is very valid! We're still discussing what type of formatting we would like for the discussion and book posts. poppypickle will be posting about the rules soon, so let me know if you have any thoughts or valuable input.
La femme cachéela_faerie on March 1st, 2011 05:58 pm (UTC)
Ok, cool. I'll wait for the ~rules~ post. Thanks dearie!
Nichothodes Koryfoides: disney | danceplacebetween on March 1st, 2011 06:07 pm (UTC)
Do you have an opinion on this one? I don't want to flood friends list or spread discussion out, but I want members to be able to specifically post as well.
La femme cachéela_faerie on March 1st, 2011 06:19 pm (UTC)
Hmmm, it's tough. I totally get that you don't want to dilute the discussion posts.

I personally *would* like the option to be able to post in case there's something really interesting and worthy of it's own entire post, or a really pressing question. I'm sure that would be a pretty rare occurrence though right?
Nichothodes Koryfoides: disney | danceplacebetween on March 1st, 2011 08:03 pm (UTC)
Maybe we'll start moderating posting and just let the good stuff through lololol, although of course it is always very subjective. I think we're also going to open up a suggestions post so that we can have a) member postings and b) party posts for different books (like the Jane post you suggested, which I support 100%). Clearly none of us have ever run a community before - we have no idea what we are doing!
La femme cachéela_faerie on March 1st, 2011 09:22 pm (UTC)
It's easy for me to make suggestions when I'm not the one who has to make it all work! You guys are doing fabulously so far. Moderated posting might be a pain for you guys to deal with, but it might be a good option at least in the beginning.

I bought it this afternoon because I fundamentally disagree with downloading books from the internet. I've never been able to bring myself to do it, it's so... impersonal. I love having my own copies of my favourite stories to keep on my shelf.

I don't know if I've said this already, but I'm so glad that this book club was started up. I'm always meaning to buy new books and I go to book stores and end up standing around and faffing for ages. Then I inevitably end up buying a low-grade chick-lit book that kills off several brain cells (not that I don't adore chick-lit when it's done right, but that's rare and wonderful) so I obviously need some guidance in my book purchasing.
Nichothodes Koryfoidesplacebetween on March 2nd, 2011 05:07 pm (UTC)
I love having copies too. Sometimes I'll download books that I know I have at home (in San Diego) but obviously don't have ready access to/don't want to buy again.

I'M SO HAPPY ABOUT THIS TOO!! I love directed reading and I love discussion, so book clubs are my thing.

I don't have anything on this computer than can open a RAR file...does anyone have it in another format?
Nichothodes Koryfoides: disney | danceplacebetween on March 2nd, 2011 05:05 pm (UTC)
I download a lot of .rar files (books, mostly) and use UnRarX for it - not sure if you're on a Mac or not. I also have StuffItExpander and Perian.

HOWEVER, because this is a good point, I uploaded the regular PDF file here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/bf230i
